‘Tis the season to be a little triggered.
While this can be a wonderful time for connection and making memories with loved ones, it can be tough for anyone feeling lonely this season.
A recent study found that 31% of adults have felt lonely during the holidays within the last five years, and 41 percent have worried about a family member or friend feeling lonesome.
Here are six ways to make your days, and the ones you care about, a little brighter.
..while you’re on there, write a handful of supportive comments on posts in your feed. Everyone loves seeing kind words on social media, even if you haven’t engaged with them in awhile. And consider sharing a holiday selfie so your network has a chance to say hi, too. Then log off to avoid the negative impacts of mindless scrolling.
Looking for a cozy day? Dress the part. Itching to be more active? Make sure your outfit is adventure ready. In the days between now and the end of the year, it’s all too easy to slip into our habitual pandemic/WFH gear. Bringing a little bit of intention to this routine task has a big impact on how we show up for ourselves all day long.
These days, answering the question “how are you?” is a whole thing. When reaching out to friends this season, try keeping the connection easy for both of you – consider sending a funny meme or a link to a show/book/recipe you like. Or if your camera roll is anything like mine, send a cute pic of your pet along with a holiday hello.
As safely as you can during COVID, try looking for ways to be out and about, even if it’s just for an hour. Scheduling a manicure, walking to your local coffee shop, taking a group fitness class, or running to the local store in lieu of ordering online can do wonders for feelings of isolation. Local businesses will appreciate your support too!
Instead of aiming for an idealized version of your life, consider it a win if you do one new thing today and simply take care of yourself the rest of the time. Processing heavy emotions requires a great deal of energy – so set yourself up for success by keeping expectations simple this time of year.
If it’s a particularly rough day, try going to bed earlier than usual. Sometimes we just need to let the day be what it is and start fresh tomorrow.
And if you find yourself in a good place this year, consider reaching out to a friend, neighbor, or colleague who might be struggling a bit. A small gesture of connection can make the world of difference for someone feeling lonely during the holidays.
